Ban on burqa’s in France

Today in AM New York I read an article [http://www.amny.com/media/acrobat/2009-06/23136028.pdf – page 6] about French President Nicolas Sarkozy speaking out against burqa (The full chadri covers the wearer's entire face except for a small region about the eyes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burqa). I would like to commend the President Sarkozy for stating “Muslim burqa would not be welcomed in France, calling the full-body religious gown a sign of the ‘debasement’ of women”. The article continued with Sarkozy saying “In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity”. I really hope that the rest of the Western World will follow his lead and put a ban on burqa’s in public. Personally, I feel burqa does not only demean women in their social statue but also presents a safety hazard in today’s world.
