90% of sense of humor and 10% of patience

Recently I was at a relative’s bridal shower where every guest was supposed to share their secret to what makes a successful marriage, kind of like the words of wisdom to the new bride.

This made me think back to how I used to get flowers every Sunday from my then boyfriend, now my husband. This year on Mother’s day I finally got some flowers after at least six reminders and hints. While waiting for my turn to speak I wondered, when did my Prince Charming lost his charm?

What could I possibly suggest to this new bride when my life seemed to disintegrate into every day routine of laundry, work, daily choirs and constant running around after the kids?

And then it hit me, in all this craziness of ordinary life, which to an observer might not look romantic, we never lost it. We evolved and changed, but in a good way. So we metamorphosed into the Bundy’s of the Married with Children or The Simpson’s but we never stopped laughing in the process.

Finally it was my turn to speak and I wished her 90% of sense of humor and 10% of patience. I believe that with this recipe she’ll do just fine.

Congratulations to J & S!
